HEARD
Heard was a group effort, created by Amy Gill, Emily Horrocks, Mya Hodgdon, Sara Ray and myself. This controversial newspaper design was created to spread awareness of sexual assault and rape and encourage the conversation of rape, as uncomfortable as the topic is. Each of us had the responsibility of designing two spreads that fit cohesively in the newspaper and show the different ranges of assault, where it's common and how someone can receive help.
We all used the same font families (Acumin Pro and Kopius) and we had a specific color to work with for our spreads to differentiate the topics. Using a sans serif and slab serif was an appropriate choice because it blended the message of traditional meeting new. Our project was displayed in a newspaper format instead of a zine or a poster because of how often many cases aren't spoken about in the news. The irony of using a newspaper, the classic way of getting news, to display something uncomfortable and something that isn't easy to discuss is what we had aimed for. Along with the newspaper, we designed and created deliverables that would act as walking adds for Heard.
My color was pink and my topic was Rape Kits and how Police Culture can influence the success or failure of these kits. This piece was not created to speak ill of the officers that protect us, but to bring more awareness to the blatant lack of training and funding they haven't and can't receive. I chose to make this piece very loud to highlight the key points and draw the eyes to the key points of my topic. Making this piece so loud was important to me, because it's crucial to educate ourselves on these forms of attacks and to normalize it being discussed.
